But a major factor that compounded the failure of military leaders in the years before 1914 was their inability to grasp that the world was changing around them and to recognize that their tried and tested models were no longer suitable for a new, industrialized era. Most of the recent commentary has focused on the declining health of the liberal world order and the flashpoints that might spark war today. And while drawing historical parallels is always fraught with the risk of overreach, the similarities are nonetheless striking.
